A&P Falmouth sponsored the Cornish Rowing Challenge at St Mawes on 12 September.
St Mawes, across the water from Falmouth, hosted the Races and were rewarded with thousands of visitors arriving to watch and cheer the teams on. The Races were also covered live by the BBC’s flagship current affairs programme, The One Show.
Gold medal winners Helen Glover, from Penzance, Yeovil-born Heather Stanning, Katherine Grainger and Sophie Hosking were all in the same boat, for the series of races off St Mawes, against Cornwall’s best gig rowers.
The Team GB rowers competed first in “sliding seat” boats similar to their own racing boats, and then in gigs against teams from communities across Cornwall.
The evening culminated in a race of ten pilot gigs, mixing the Olympic champions, gig rowers from clubs across Cornwall and spectators who volunteered to have a go.
The Cornish Rowing Challenge, raised money for Helston-based ShelterBox and was organised by the Cornish-born Beijing Olympic medallist Annie Vernon.
Falmouth Gig Club is the current holder of the National Pilot Gig Championship, and rowers from the Club also took part in the Races.

Two teams from A&P Falmouth are celebrating their success in Cornwall’s first ever Human Race Festival of Sport having covered more than 100 kms between them in less than three hours.
A&P entered two relay teams of three in the Olympic distance relay triathlon, which involves a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle ride and a 10km run.
Twenty-one teams took part with A&P bagging the seventh and eleventh places in their event.
A&P Team 2, made up of office staff Jonathan Winnan, Chris Gunn and Scott McCormack, came in after 2 hours and 46 minutes. A&P Team 1, made up of Ben Reid, Donald Chambers and Mark Simmons from the fabrication department, came in just seven minutes later.
Chris Gunn, who is contract manager in A&P’s Cluster Support Team and tackled the 40km cycling leg said: “All the guys are pretty fit and it was a great event against the beautiful backdrop of Mounts Bay, with a brilliant atmosphere.
“A&P Team 1 did take an early lead until marshalling errors on the cycle leg handed the all important victory to A&P Team 2, and we haven’t let them forget it. It was great fun and next year I might even do a triathlon on my own!”
