Gig Lessons for crew of Grande Togo

Tuesday 8 October, was a misty, cool evening, but this didn’t deter the Captain and crew of Grimaldi car carrier Grande Togo taking time out of their busy docking schedule to take to the water in a Cornish gig.

Captain Carlo Granara, ship’s Superintendent Eduardo Libraro and members of the crew took the Falmouth gig, Greenbank, across to Flushing, with Greg Carroll, of A&P Falmouth,  Director of the Falmouth Watersport’s Association and Past Chairman and Club Captain of Falmouth Gig Club as cox and Peter Child, A&P Falmouth’s Managing Director, as No 5 rower and passenger. Peter Child arranged the event after Captain Carlo Granara asked if his crew could “have a go” after hearing that Grimaldi teams had regularly entered the A&P Gig Races in the past.

Peter has taken part in many gig races in the past including the Two Castles Gig Race, and Greg has been part of the Falmouth Team which has won a total 17 times in  Men’s and Ladies classes at the Isles of Scilly World Gig Championships.

Danish visit for A&P Group highlights prospects

Jez Littlejohns, Sales Director, has just returned from a trip with A&P’s Group’s Danish Agent, Claes Eberhardt of Eberhardt Agencies & Shipping ApS, Copenhagen.

During the week, as well as seeing the famous Little Mermaid,  Jez and Claes visited CT Offshore, A2Sea, Esvagt, DFDS, Maersk Supply, Maersk Drilling, Maersk Tankers, Lauritzen Kosan and Nordic Tankers.  It was particularly good to see companies in this sector moving towards Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) systems, as A&P is now in a position to offer BWT expertise to shipowners with a full turnkey project from inception to commissioning and a supplier database of most of the major manufacturers.

A&P can advise on which type of system either Filtration/UV or Filtration/Electro-chlorination would best suit the client’s vessel depending on type, size and route.

If you would like further advice on BWT, please contact John Paine on 07747 843381.

Falmouth’s Flying Angel Centre re-opens

The popular Flying Angel Centre, inside Falmouth Docks, re-opened on Monday 7 October with bunting and flags flying high.  All seafarers who visited were served cakes and tea and all received a free gift of a Falmouth Mission mug.

The Mission to Seafarers, Flying Angel Centre has been closed since late March for the building of a new bespoke Centre, a portable Studio Ark eco-building designed and built by Cornish company Pioneer Environmental Buildings.

Falmouth Mission offers visiting seafarers free wi-fi, foreign currency exchange, International Phone Cards and warm clothing.  Its garden has been well-used in the Summer months when the Centre was closed for building work.  The Flaminia Summerhouse offers free wi-fi 24/7 when the main Centre is closed. The Centre also boasts a chapel and 2 private phone boxes.  Volunteers are on hand to chat and help seafarers contact home, as well as offering hot and cold drinks.  The Mission’s cat, Bagpuss, has also been provided with upgraded accommodation – a cat-sized ship’s bunk, complete with stairs and curtains!

The Centre will have an official opening at the end of the month.
